How to Write a Temp Position on Resume

alliance temp resumesOk, you've had multiple temp positions, enjoying most of them and gaining a lot of experience and skill, but now you're ready for a little more long-term work in your favorite field, so how do you design your resume. After all, the last thing you need is for HR's 10-second glance to see multi jobs, deem you unreliable and toss your resume never to be viewed again. Here are some options to help you "make the most" of those temp positions.

  1. List your temp work as one overall experience. For example:

"Accounts receivable and payable, payroll, and office management for a variety of businesses, including . . ."

At this point list the two or three companies, which will be the most recognized and respected. If you received high ratings in your performance reviews or earned awards, be sure to mention it. Finally, if all of these temp positions were gained through one staffing agency, note this at the end, with the date being when you started and ended your connection with the agency, rather than a different date for each position.

  1. Once again, combine your temp work, but flip flop the method listed in #1. For example:

List the staffing agency as your employer – with the dates of your connection first. Then include the various skills and experiences you developed while working at various companies under the umbrella of the staffing agency.

  1. Create a functional or chrono-functional resume.

Functional resumes simply list the knowledge, skills, abilities, and specialties you developed through the years. Special achievements such as "saved company X amount of money" or "developed system for organizing stock" are listed as well as timely awards. Either in the cover letter or as a very brief not in the header, indicate that your resume reflects relevant experience, skills, etc., that were gained through temp assignments.

  1. Remember, you do not have to list every temp job.

Choose the temp jobs that most pertain to the position you are seeking and highlight those. Present them in one group, listing everything pertinent to your field. You can include any soft skills you acquired as well. Lump the entire package with either one stop-start date or as skills you've acquired through "various temp positions."

The key is to focus on what you have learned and accomplished – how you have made a difference at the jobs you worked, rather than focusing on the word "temp." Some experts shy away from using it at all. Regardless, be positive – rather than embarrassed – about your temping days. Make it a selling point – a gathering of skills, ideas, experiences that could only be gained through variety, and will be a plus for the company who is lucky enough to hire you.
